Invasive plants are a significant threat to Maine lakes.   Shallow lake are especially vulnerable since the weeds will be able to get an adequate supply of sunlight.   Since Big Bear and Little Bear Pond are relatively shallow they are particularly susceptible.  These weeds are very aggressive and hardy and can quickly spread from a single fragment or seed.  The State has implented a $500 fine for boaters who do not clean fragments of plants off of their boat trailers and boats.  They have also implemented a boat registration sticker to raise funds to help fight these aquatic invaders

This is what invasive plants can do to a lake!!

The Massachusetts Guide to Invasive Plants (1.3Mb PDF File) provides useful information for identifying the invasive plants that are also a threat to Maine lakes, including Bear Pond. If you think you may have spotted an invasive species, please contact one of the Pond Monitors or Officers.
